Midwest Career Source offers phlebotomy training and apprenticeship opportunities that provide students with hands-on experience through one of our trusted healthcare partners across the Metro East and Southern Illinois region.
Phlebotomy technicians play a vital role in the diagnosis and monitoring of a wide range of medical conditions. Through the collection of blood samples, they help generate critical information that guides healthcare professionals toward accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and ongoing patient care. Without phlebotomy technicians, early detection and timely diagnosis would not be possible.
This 160-hour phlebotomy technician program (80 hours of theory and 80 hours of clinical training) is designed to provide students with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed for success in the field of phlebotomy. The program focuses on the technical and procedural aspects of blood specimen collection, including venipuncture and other essential techniques required to become a phlebotomy technician.
Through a combination of classroom instruction and practical experience, students will learn key concepts such as Introduction to Phlebotomy and Infection Control, Legal Issues in Healthcare, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Phlebotomy Equipment and Supplies, Phlebotomy Procedures, and Fundamental Phlebotomy Skills.
The phlebotomy apprenticeship is designed for individuals looking to begin a career in healthcare or advance their current career by gaining specialized phlebotomy training and experience.
Students will learn how to safely collect blood samples from patients while understanding key pre-analytical factors and how to manage potential complications. They will demonstrate knowledge of the full venipuncture process, from receiving the test order to properly preparing and transporting the specimen to the laboratory.
Students will also gain hands-on experience using a variety of collection methods and equipment, including different types of tubes, needles, and syringes. In addition, they will learn to recognize and address the unique challenges involved in collecting specimens from pediatric and geriatric patients.
